What is Graphic Design?

When we hear the terms graphic design, what comes to mind is usually designs made with graphics or pictures. While this may be a close description, graphic design actually encompasses a wide area and is used in things like website layouts, logos, infographics, mobile apps, business cards, posters, product labels, signs, and the list goes on and on. Graphic design is the process of planning, creating and communicating messages or ideas using textual and visual content. Choosing a career in graphic design could open up many possibilities to a qualified and talented individual.

Graphic design is the practice of taking textual elements and graphics and turning them into different types of media. Graphic designs are used for many purposes but are mostly used to help a product or service connect with a consumer. In the marketing world, it’s often said that it’s all about appearance. If a product looks good and looks appealing, it’s going to sell easier. This is where graphic design comes in. Whether it’s letters, numbers, designs or animations, they’re all forms of graphic design designed to make something look appealing. Graphic designs are made up of these principals and elements.

How to Become a Graphic Designer

Candidates who aspire to become graphic designers should have a bachelor’s degree in graphic design or a related field. Individuals who already have a bachelor’s degree in another field may choose to complete certificate programs or technical training in graphic design. Graphic design students should choose an accredited school. There are currently about 350 colleges or universities that are accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design.

Students will complete courses in computerized design, printing techniques, website design, marketing, principles of design, studio art, commercial graphics production and business. Some colleges may require the student to complete art and design courses before entering the baccalaureate program. Students often gain great experience by completing an internship. At the end of the program, the students are required to complete a portfolio of their graphic designs and drawings to demonstrate what they learned in the program and to present to potential employers. Graphic designers can also pursue certifications through product vendors

Career Outlook for Graphic Designers

Although basic graphic designers are only expected to see an employment growth of 4 percent between 2016 and 2026, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), graphic designers working in computer systems design and related services are predicted to see a 20 percent increase in jobs. The BLS also reported that graphic designers earned an average yearly income of $53,280 as of May 2017. Graduates of graphic design programs generally pursue positions as graphic designers, but may also look for other related positions.
