About the University of Northwestern Ohio
The University of Northwestern Ohio is a private university with an open admissions policy that accepts all types of students, including those still in high school and those who are in the military. Established in 1920, it has a large campus in Lima, Ohio that sits on more than 200 acres of land. The university was the Northwestern School of Commerce from 1920 to 1970. After moving to a new location in Lima, it became the Northwestern Business College. It added technical programs to the curriculum in 1973 and changed its name to reflect that addition. Before becoming the University of Northwestern Ohio in 2000, it was Northwestern College. Also called UNOH, it was the first college established in Lima and now has an enrollment of more than 4,500 students, many of whom come from out of the state.
University of Northwestern Ohio Accreditation Details
UNOH has regional accreditation for all its degree programs, including both online options and the programs designed for traditional students. That accreditation comes from the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools (NCACS). This is why it can grant financial aid packages when students use the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and accept credits when students transfer there. UNOH also has accreditation from the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP) and the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP).
University of Northwestern Ohio Application Requirements
Prospective UNOH students can meet with an admissions representative or talk to one over the phone. The university’s representatives can explain the application process to students and go over the procedure. Though students must apply, they have the choice between applying online or sending an application through the mail. They can also apply in person at the university. UNOH allows students to use different methods when they pay the $20 application fee too. Admissions counselors will receive each application and make a decision within four weeks. Students may receive full acceptance or conditional acceptance, which means they don’t meet all requirements for admission. Those students remain on probation for at least one semester before they get full acceptance.
The College Credit Plug program accepts high school students and allows them to work on transfer credits and associate’s degrees. All other students must have a GED or a high school diploma to start classes. They will also need to take a placement test or provide an official standardized test score. UNOH requires that students take the test or submit a score before they attend orientation, which then lets them register for classes.
Tuition and Financial Aid
Though most students pay $230 per credit hour for UNOH classes, online students pay $275 per credit hour. The discount available for military students will reduce their rate to $165 per credit. Students who apply and can show that they are military veterans will receive a 10 percent discount too. They receive that discount through a scholarship program, which requires that they maintain a grade point average of 2.5 or higher to renew their scholarships each semester. UNOH estimates that students will pay $29,700 in total to earn an associate’s degree through the virtual college if they are not veterans or in the military.
Once students submit the FAFSA, they can go online and log into their accounts to view their financial aid award letters. The letter details how much they will get from each program. Several scholarships are available for students in an online degree program. If a student receives more aid than they need to cover their direct costs, the university allows them to take the extra funds out of their accounts to pay their indirect costs. Some of the financial aid that goes to students in the online associate’s degree programs at the University of Northwestern Ohio also include student loans and grants.
