About Surry Community College
Surry Community College originated in May 1963 when the Mount Airy Lions Club sent a five-member committee to the Surry County Board of Commissioners to advocate for local schooling. On January 10, 1964, the appeal was answered by creating Surrey Community College. That Fall, Mr. John Krepick welcomed the inaugural class for just $40 tuition. By September 1967, Surry opened its current 100-acre Blue Ridge campus in Dobson near the Edwards- Franklin House. Accredited in 1969, Surry Community College soon begin expanding to Yadkinville, Pilot Mountain, Elkin, and Mount Airy. On its 50th year in 2014, Surry added a five-acre vineyard for its unique Viticulture Associate. The Online Learning Department led by VP of Technology, Dr. Candace Holder, also made courses digital with NC-SARA authorization. Budgeting $31.04 million, Surry Community College now enrolls 4,014 for-credit Knights online or on-site with JobsConnect services and clubs like Sigma Phi Alpha. In 2011, Surry ranked in the Aspen Institute’s top 10 percent of community colleges. Graded “B+” for student life on Niche, Surry was also crowned the seventh best North Carolina institution by Accredited Schools Online.
Surry Community College Accreditation Details
On June 19, 2014, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) voted to extend Surry Community College’s Level I accreditation for 10 more years under its president, Dr. David Shockley, who received the 2017 NC State Board of Community Colleges President of the Year Award. Headquartered 319 miles southwest via Interstate 85 in Decatur, this nonprofit 11-state Appalachia accreditor is recognized by the Council on Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) to assess the quality of Surry’s 44 associate, 18 diploma, and 47 certificate options. Surry Community College Application Requirements
Starting at Surry Community College is classified “non-competitive” by Peterson’s because 100 percent of the 1,203 Fall 2017 applicants were successful for open enrollment. However, first-year Knights must graduate from accredited secondary schools or finish an adult high school diploma. Marks above 145 on the four GED sections are mandated. Minimum 500 TASC and 8.0 HiSET subject scores also qualify. Unweighted GPAs above 2.6 are considered college-ready. For guaranteed admission with lower grades, students take the NCDAP placement test. Achieving at least 18 ACT English, 480 SAT Reading, 22 ACT Math, and 530 SAT Math scores is considered equivalent. Course prerequisites vary like the RIBN Program’s Anatomy, Biology, and Chemistry requirements. Surry transfers are credited for regionally accredited college-level courses graded “C-” or better. Non-U.S. residents also often need to prove English fluency at these TOEFL minimums: 500 Paper, 173 Computer, or 61 Internet.
Surry Community College has rolling registration until August 3rd for Fall, December 21st for Spring, and May 10th for Summer entry. Deadlines for international learners applying outside the U.S. are April 15th, September 15th, and February 15th respectively. Foreign transfers have until July 15th, December 1st, and April 15th though. Prospective Knights complete the NC Residency Determination Interview, then use the certification number on the CFNC Application online. Tuition and Financial Aid
For 2018-19, Surry Community College is charging North Carolina residents maximum tuition of $1,216 per semester or $2,432 annually. Non-resident undergrads pay up to $4,288 by term or $8,576 each year. Studying part-time incurs $76 to $268 per credit. Online courses each add a $10 distance education fee. Other potential add-ons are the $32 activity fee, $16 technology fee, $10 placement test fee, and $3 accident insurance fee per term. The North Carolina General Assembly priced non-curriculum tuition at $70 for 1-24 credits, $125 for 25-50 credits, and $180 for 51-70 credits. Surry budgets $8,330 for off-campus living expenses. Textbooks and supplies cost around $1,700 yearly. Average annual associate attendance equals $12,165 in-state and $18,309 out-of-state.
According to the NCES College Navigator, the Financial Aid Office disburses $11.09 million overall for 68 percent of full-time Surry Knights to open median packages worth $4,953. Submitting FAFSA forms coded 002970 will determine Federal SEOG and Year-Round Pell Grant eligibility. The FastChoice portal helps manage Federal Direct Subsidized and Unsubsidized loans.
