About Georgia Northwestern Technical College
Georgia Northwestern Technical College originated in 1962 when the General Assembly approved the opening of Coosa Valley Technical College under Maurice Culberson’s direction. Meanwhile, Walker County Area Vocational-Technical School was founded in 1964 in Rock Spring under Dea Pounders. In 1988, both became part of the Department of Technical & Adult Education (DTAE). The next Fall, the Adult Education program was launched for distance learning. Fully accredited in 1997, Coosa Valley acquired an additional Polk County location in 1998. On July 1, 2009, the two institutions merged into one Georgia Northwestern Technical College. By 2011, GNTC was the state’s third-largest technical institution. In 2014, Georgia Northwestern Tech was a finalist for the TAG Diversity Leadership Award.
Budgeting $38.22 million yearly, Georgia Northwestern Technical College now serves 16,402, including 4,686 online, Bobcats with seven locations and four clubs like SkillsUSA. On October 1, 2013, Georgia Northwestern Technical College was satisfactorily reaffirmed by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) Board of Trustees for Level I accreditation through 2023 without sanctions under President Pete McDonald, who earned the Wesley Johnson Leadership Award of Merit. Located 109 miles down Interstate 75 in Decatur, this elite 11-state Southeast Region accreditor is recognized by the Council on Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) to evaluate all of GNTC’s 200+ programs. Georgia Northwestern Technical College Application Requirements
The U.S. News & World Report classified admission to Georgia Northwestern Technical College as “least selective” because 100 percent of the 2,964 Fall 2013 entrants were accepted. First-year Bobcats still must display collegiate readiness after a secondary diploma though. Earning a 145 or better on all four GED sections would be sufficient. Students must be at least 16 years old at entrance. Maintaining a minimum 2.0 GPA is required to avoid probation. Associate degree-level coursework mandates satisfactory placement testing. Accuplacer marks must rise above 70 for Sentence Skills, 64 for Reading, 34 for Arithmetic, and 57 for Algebra. Similar qualifying Compass scores are 63, 80, 26, and 40 respectively. Online undergrads receive waivers if they’ve earned a 450 Reading SAT and 440 Math SAT score or better. A 16 English ACT and 19 Math ACT mark would also be eligible. Transfers are test-exempt with 30+ accredited college credits graded “C” or greater.
Georgia Northwestern Technical College has rolling admission year-round for decisions in only 3-5 business days. Online students can begin any six-week term if qualifications are met. Note the GNTC Foundation has an April 30th deadline for financial aid consideration though. Simply submit a signed Technical Colleges of System Application online for $25. Tuition and Financial Aid
For 2018-19, Georgia Northwestern Technical College billed Peach State as well as Alabama and Tennessee residents $89 per credit. Non-resident U.S. tuition rose to $178 per credit. Foreign nationals paid the most at $356 per credit. Basic Law Enforcement training was $184 to $350 per credit with a $600 program fee. Online courses had test proctoring fees of $10 to $50. The Helping Outstanding Pupils Educationally Scholarship gifts 78.65 percent of tuition for Georgians holding GPAs above 3.0.
