Delgado Community College offers several online programs that may be completed without any on-campus classroom requirements and which are also administered in cooperation with the National Council for State Authorization Reciprocity Agreements (NC-SARA). The organization helps maintain the consistency of programs offered across many different states. Students will use a tool known as Canvas to access their online classes.
Students can enroll in several online associate’s degree programs, as well as numerous certificate programs. Programs include an Associate of Applied Science in Accounting, an Associate of Science in Business Administration, and an Associate of Applied Science in Business and Management. Other degrees include an Associate of Arts in Criminal Justice, an Associate of General Studies, and an Associate of Applied Science in Hospitality Management.
There are several available concentrations for students in the A.A.S. in Business and Management. Options feature the topics of banking and finance, business systems design, general business, and human resources management. Students can also focus on entrepreneurship, logistics, marketing, music business, real estate, and retail management.
Students may also enroll in an Associate of Arts Louisiana Transfer Degree, which offers specializations in business, criminal justice, humanities, and social science. Meanwhile, applicants who want to enroll in a certificate program may pursue an Accounting Technology: Accounting Clerk C.T.S., a Banking & Lending C.T.S., a Business Systems Design C.T.S., or a Certificate of General Studies, C.G.S.
Additional certificates are available in entrepreneurship, logistics technology, website design, human resources assistant, and real estate professional. Some of the certificates and associate’s degrees that are available 100 percent online also have some opportunities for hybrid experiences where students spend some time on campus in class. However, students aren’t required to attend classes on campus.
The college recommends that all first-time students and anyone who is enrolled in online-only programs takes the Success in College Course, which can help improve the student’s readiness for college and increase the ability of the student to balance work and school while enrolled. After taking the class, students should have a good idea as to whether online or on-campus classes will offer them the best college experience.
About Delgado Community College
Delgado Community College is located in Louisiana and has several campuses in the New Orleans area. The school is part of the Louisiana Community and Technical College System and has been in operation since 1921. The school was originally called the Delgado Trades School in the 1920s and would eventually become Delgado Community College in 1980. There are an estimated 19,000 students attending the college.
The college is part of the National Junior College Athletic Association, and students on the college’s basketball and baseball teams play in the Miss-Lou Conference as the Dolphins. The college’s official colors are gold and green. The college operates campuses in Slidell, on the East and West Banks of New Orleans, near Lake Pontchartrain, and within the City of New Orleans. Students may earn associate’s degrees from the college.
Delgado Community College Accreditation Details
Delgado Community College is regionally accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. Accreditation allows the college to award certificates, diplomas, and associate degrees. The college was first accredited in 1971 and most recently underwent reaccreditation in 2016. Some of the programs offered by the college are further accredited by various agencies related to specific industries and areas of study.
Agencies that have approved or accredited programs at Delgado Community College include the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs, the American Board of Funeral Service Education, and the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences. Additional approvals have come from the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education, the Commission on Accreditation of Ophthalmic Medical Programs, and the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists.
Delgado Community College Application Requirements
General admission requirements for students of Delgado Community College include having proof of immunization and taking the SAT or ACT. International students or those whose first language isn’t English must pass an English language proficiency test, and the college also requires that students take a placement test administered by the Office of Advising and Testing. Students will be placed into courses based on their reading, English, and math knowledge.
The college accepts applications from high school graduates, home-schooled students, and students who have earned a GED. There are also some instances where students without a high school diploma or GED can gain entry into the college, but those students cannot qualify for federal financial aid. Male students between the ages of 18 and 25 must register for the draft before they can enroll in classes.
Tuition and Financial Aid
Tuition for students at Delgado Community College depends on a student’s residency status. When all fees are included, the price per credit for residents is $169.96 per credit, and the price for non-residents is $348.66 per credit. Non-residents pay an additional $178.70 for tuition, which is why their rate is higher. Fees included with the full tuition rate include an operational fee, an academic excellence fee, and a building use fee. Students will also pay a student services fee, an enterprise resource planning fee, and a technology fee.
Students who attend classes online will pay an online tuition rate of $133.93 per credit, as well as an online charge of $5.03 per credit hour. Online students will also pay a student services fee of $7.00 per credit hour, an online ERP fee of $5.00 per credit hour, and an online registration fee of $40 each semester. Students who want to enroll in an audit capacity will pay the same tuition rate as regular enrollment.
The college suggests that students and their families are primarily responsible for paying for the student’s education but that students may apply for financial aid when they are unable to pay for tuition. Students must submit a FAFSA form if they want to apply for loans from the federal student loan program and must make satisfactory academic progress throughout their college career to maintain eligibility for financial aid.
There are scholarships available for classes taken at the college that are administered by the Future Farmers of America, JAG-LA, and SkillsUSA. Students may also apply for scholarships offered in cooperation with Delgado Community College, like the Jacobs Tech Scholarship, Grainger Tools for Tomorrow Scholarship, and the Cafe Reconcile Scholarship.
