About Alaska Pacific University

Alaska Pacific University got its start in the late 1950s as Alaska Methodist University. APU’s founder, Peter Gordon Gould was an Aleut, who became the state’s first Native minister of the United Methodist Church. Today, it is a small college in Anchorage, Alaska, that offers specialities in indigenous studies and rural management, healthcare and the liberal arts.

Despite being a small college, it has earned its share of praise from entities like the US News and World Report, which ranked APU 82nd on its Regional Universities West list and 91st on its Top Performers on Social Mobility list. Although the university’s origins were of a religious nature, it offers no religious studies degrees.

Incoming freshmen students are expected to live on campus and remain in campus housing for the first two years of their studies. Due to its location, the outdoors and the environment play a big role in the school’s academic programs, as well as in student life. It’s the home of a renowned Nordic Ski Team.

Its ski center, APU Nordic Ski Center, is a place where Olympic-level cross-country skiers come to train. The university itself has a ski team, and in the past, the ski team from the former Alaska Methodist University competed in the 1972 Winter Olympics.

Notable alumni include Olympic cross-country skier, Sadie Bjornsen, author and sportswriter, Lew Freedman and Liquid Blue vocalist, Scott Stephens.
