Health informatics is a field where clinical, technology and financial disciplines all collide to create one interdisciplinary study. 1. Health Informatics Specialist

One of the more common roles for graduates who have recently completed a computer science or related degree program is the role of the health informatics specialist (HIS). A HIS will focus their attention on implementing new technology that will be used in the setting by nurses, doctors, and other staff.

Health information specialists will help with the implementation planning and stay within regulatory compliance but they are also responsible for training. They will create a training plan, review and update educational manuals, and troubleshoot problems that staff may have while working with the technologies.

2. Clinical Informatics Specialist

The federal government setting deadlines for all written medical records to be converted into electronic health records affect the role of clinical informatics specialists the most. These informatics specialists are in charge of managing the transition from paper documents to records systems.

In addition to working with all of the systems that digitize medical records, the clinical specialists will improve upon the processes of entering diagnoses into records systems. This is why most clinical specialists will have their Master’s of Nursing so that they are prepared and highly trained to work as both a clinician and an informatics technician.

3. Informatics Nursing Specialist

There are often blurred lines between various jobs in the field of health informatics. Clinical specialists will oversee turning paper records into electronic copies and informatics nurses work to assess the information technology needs within the facility. Informatics nurses look for different programs that the nursing department can use to better communicate with other medical teams and increase efficiency.

Like clinical specialists, an informatics nurse will need to possess a nursing degree. While there is no official requirement by state boards of nursing that says that professionals must be certified, the American Nurses Credentialing Center offers certification for informatics nurses who pass the exam.

4. Clinical Analyst

College graduates who like to analyze data and trends and who possess a bachelor’s in social or life sciences may be interested in a position as a clinical analyst. The main focus of this role is to create databases full of information that is used within the medical facility to improve workflow and ultimately to increase efficiency.

5. Clinical Informatics Management

Clinical managers oversee the operations of all staff, including the clinical informatics specialists. Their role as a manager is to keep staff trained on applications that are used all across departments in the facility. They will also manage the budget for technology, review of systems to ensure compliance and project management for new implementations.
