Online Associate’s Degree Programs Available from Southwest Wisconsin Technical College

Southwest Wisconsin Technical College offers seven online associate’s degree programs that include a unique major in cancer information management (CIM). The CIM program prepares students for working with doctors and other health care professionals as they gather cancer data and research. They learn how to identify cancer clusters and the factors that can lead to cancer. This program includes 62 credits of courses that students can take over five semesters. They’ll take Medical Terminology and General Anatomy and Physiology in the first semester. Later semesters include courses such as Introduction to Cancer Registry Management, Cancer Disease Management, Cancer Patient Follow-Up and Oncology Coding and Staging.
In the early childhood education major, students develop the skills that teachers need when they work with kids in elementary schools and preschools. They will take classes on working with both kids and their parents, including Marriage and Family and Early Childhood Education: Social Studies, Art and Music. A big part of the program is a preschool practicum, which requires that students spend a semester working in a school. Southwest Wisconsin Technical College can help students find a practicum location outside of Wisconsin.
Four of the online associate’s degree programs allow students to study business. The most popular major is in business that allows local students to take one or more classes on the Southwest Wisconsin Technical College campus. Though the program’s curriculum can change, the college gives students a course outline when they start that shows each class they will take. This major includes Business Law, Management Principles, Career Planning in Business and Marketing Principles. Accounting, supply chain management and leadership development are some related majors.
The online system also offers a degree in health information technology. It gets students ready to gather health care information and both organize and analyze that data. Students will take Professional Practice, which is a course that functions as an internship. All of their remaining work and classes will take place online. The program features Health Quality Management, Foundations of Health Information Management, CPT Coding and other courses.

Southwest Wisconsin Technical College is a technical college that serves the needs of students in the southwest counties of Wisconsin. The state established the college in 1965 and helped the campus open two years later. Students initially had the option of enrolling in the farm training program, which taught them the basics of running a commercial farm. Though the college no longer offers this program, it does offer several majors relating to agriculture. The campus went through some renovations in 2009 that expanded the size of the campus and brought in new buildings and resources. Located in the town of Fennimore, the college caters to students from 30 districts and counties, including Grant and Crawford. Also called Southwest Tech, it is part of the Wisconsin Technical College System, which includes 15 other colleges and schools.
Southwest Wisconsin Technical College Accreditation Details
Southwest Tech students who need help paying for school can submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) before they look at payment plans. They can use this form to get an aid package because the college has regional accreditation from the Higher Learning Commission (HLC), which is one of the requirements to get that aid. It also has the approval needed to offer programs for veterans. Some of the programs that also have accreditation include those in welding, nursing, automotive technology and health information technology.
Southwest Wisconsin Technical College Application Requirements
As Southwest Tech does not have an application deadline, students can apply up to the day the semester starts. The college may even accept students who apply after the semester begins, though it may encourage them to wait until the next semester. Each program has a limited number of spots available and can fill up well before the beginning of the semester. That is why the college recommends that students apply as soon as they know they want to start a program and what major they want to choose. Students only need to apply online and pay a $30 application fee.
The college offers credits for students based on the information that they share. Those who served in the military can submit their records and get credit for any classes they took or training programs they did. Credit also goes to students who took advanced placement or dual enrollment courses in high school and those who earned college credits. Southwest Tech requires that students submit their transcripts for evaluation before it will award them any credits. Through the online system that lets them apply, students can view any additional requirements or information that the college needs. This system also allows the college to contact students who need to take a placement test.
Tuition and Financial Aid
At Southwest Tech, students will receive a bill at the beginning of the semester that shows them how much they owe minus any financial aid they get. The college will only send this bill via email. Those who do not qualify for financial aid must pay their balances on the first day of the new semester or set up a payment plan. This will require that they make a payment on the first day and then at the beginning of each month. Students pay $136.50 per credit hour as a Wisconsin resident and $204.75 per credit hour as a nonresident. They also pay 6 percent of their total amounts as an activity fee. Southwest Tech charges the same tuition and fees for online students along with a $10 per credit hour technology fee.
The college offers different plans for students who need financial aid. It can defer payment for those who qualify for reimbursement from an employer and help for students who qualify for veterans’ benefits. Through a partnership with the Great Lakes Education Guaranty Corporation, the college offers the Charger Dream, which is a program that provides students with emergency funds. Scholarships are available for those who apply by the end of March too. Students can qualify for scholarships and get loans, grants, and access to work-study when they file the FAFSA. Southwest Wisconsin Technical College offers similar financial aid packages for students in the online associate’s programs as it does for students in on-campus programs.
