Oregon State University Application Requirements
While OSU is known for its academic excellence, it does not have the same application requirements that many competitive colleges do. For example, the school does not have an average ACT or SAT score requirement.
The school does require students to submit their test scores, but the school often uses the scores for advising purposes. Students are additionally required to submit an application fee of $65, as well as an application.
Oregon State also requires students to provide OSU what the school calls an “insight resume.” The function of this document is to give the school a look at the student’s long-range goals, non-traditional learning experiences, and community involvement. It also gives the admissions team a look at the student’s ability to self-reflect and to assess his or her own self-concept.
Additionally, the school’s application page points out that the school’s admissions counselors look at more than just academics when considering a student for admission. The person’s character plays a role in the admissions process as well. Oregon State University considers students who would bring diversity, both cultural and educational, the school’s environment.
That being said, academics are important in the application process. Incoming students should demonstrate that they’ve undertaken a rigorous course of study during their high school years. Advanced placement and international baccalaureate credits are considered, as well as how the student tackled progressively more difficult sequences in math and other subjects. Incoming freshmen have to earn at least a 3.0 on a 4.0 scale to be considered for admission.
Potential graduate students are looked at by the admissions office through a similar lens. They must contribute to the school’s diverse, global population in a meaningful way.
All graduate students are expected to have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university. International students must demonstrate proficiency in English. They can provide proof of this by taking the TOEFL and the IELTS tests. Students can also prove English proficiency by earning a 3.0 on a 4.0 scale at an English-speaking institution in the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, or the US before applying to OSU.
Graduate students must fill out an application and pay the $75 application fee. They must also provide OSU with transcripts, three letters of recommendation, and the GRE (in some instances).
Tuition and Financial Aid
Oregon State University offers financial aid to students who need it. In order to qualify for aid, the school asks students to fill out the FAFSA form. The financial aid office uses the information on this form to determine the amount of aid students get.
Potentially, students can qualify for grants, like the Pell Grant, loans, work-study programs, scholarships, departmental awards, private awards, and more. Graduate students can also qualify for assistantship opportunities, which pay for their tuition and other costs.
