Mitchell Technical Institute offers four online programs for students, including an administrative office specialist program. Designed for those who want to work as office support staff, this program can also help students learn the fundamentals of opening a new business. It has a 100% job placement rate among graduates and offers help for students applying for jobs near the end of the program. The courses that majors take include Outlook Essentials, Customer Service, Document Production, Introduction to Business, Principles of Marketing and Database Concepts and Applications.
In the medical office professional program, students learn how to meet the demands found in busy medical facilities. Not only can graduates work as transcription specialists, but they may find work as office managers and secretaries. It includes scholarship opportunities that help students get $500 to $1,000 a year. Majors take six semesters of classes that include two summer sessions. The courses they take each term include Case Study Coding, Pharmacology and Administration of Medicine, Advanced Coding, Medical Law and Ethics, and Medical Insurance and Billing. Majors will also do an internship in a medical office.
Students who want to work on their own and have a business idea can enroll in the institute’s small business management program, which also prepares them for managing an office owned by another professional. Though students can do internships, they’ll also need to take general education classes along with their required courses. Their general education credits will transfer to the business and management programs available at four-year colleges. This program features more than 70 credits of classes, including Multimedia Concepts, Web Essentials, Database Concepts and Applications, Principles of Insurance, Principles of Marketing and Entrepreneurship and Small Business Management.
The institute also offers an online speech-language pathology assistant program that prepares students for helping pathologists in schools and other organizations. This is available as both a two-year and a three-year program to help students spend as much time as they need on their studies. Students learn how to address the communication needs of others based on their hearing and speech problems. Majors must take a criminal background check and provide the results of that check before they can begin the program. They’ll then take classes that include Introduction to Speech-Language Pathology, Anatomy and Physiology of Speech and Hearing, Introduction to Communication Disorders and Treatment, Behavior Management and Speech Disorders and Intervention. Students must also do two clinical observations and a minimum of one semester of clinical fieldwork.

Mitchell Technical Institute is a public and technical school often called MTI. It has a flagship campus in Mitchell, South Dakota and also operates a second campus in Yankton called the MTI Regional Technical Education Center. Established in 1968 to offer technical certificate and diploma programs for local students, it received regional accreditation in 1980 after adding various degree options to its curriculum. Students can now earn 15 certificates and 25 associate degrees from the institute, including four tracks that are available online. MTI has an average job placement rate among all programs of 99% within the first year of students finishing their programs. It was also one of 10 schools chosen in 2019 for the Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence.
Mitchell Technical Institute Accreditation Details
MTI has regional accreditation, which is why any student can use the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and get financial aid each year that they attend the institute. This accreditation comes from an organization approved by the Department of Education called the Higher Learning Commission (HLC). HLC accreditation also ensures that students can use their credits at any other school with the same level of accreditation. MTI also has authorization from the state of South Dakota to offer certificate and degree programs.
Mitchell Technical Institute Application Requirements
Students can start classes at MTI in August or January every year as long as they complete all application requirements before the term begins. Campus events allow students to tour the campus and take classes with other students. Prospective students can also attend some of the MTI events held on high school campuses across the state. The admissions process starts with the institute’s application, which is available in a paper form and online. Those who choose the paper version can visit the campus and get help filling it out.
MTI requires a transcript from the student’s high school or the equivalent of a transcript such as a GRE score or a home school record. The institute also asks for an ACT or SAT score and will accept a placement score if the student attended another college. If a student does not have a test score, the institute will require that he or she take an admissions entrance exam on campus. It does not charge for this exam but requires it to determine whether the applicant needs to take introductory courses first. A $60 tuition deposit is required of any accepted student.
Tuition and Financial Aid
The cost of attending MTI ranges from $217 to $232 per credit hour. Though tuition starts at $121 per credit hour, students pay fees that include a $35 state facility fee and a $25 institutional fee. Each department charges a fee of $30 to $45 per credit hour that varies based on which department oversees the program and courses that the student takes. MTI will apply the deposit that the student paid to his or her balance after the student registers for classes.
Multiple types of financial aid are available for students who file the FAFSA with MTI. The Federal Pell Grant Program awards students between $975 and $5,550 each year. Students who agree to work each term can qualify for work-study or work with the institute to find opportunities available from the South Dakota Department of Labor. If the student has scholarships from outside sources, MTI will accept those funds and apply the money to their accounts. Students can also get money through the Federal Direct Loan Program, which lets them borrow $5,500 in their first years and $6,500 in their future years. Those applying to the online programs at Mitchell Technical Institute who are independent can borrow more money every year.
