About Madison Area Technical College
Madison Area Technical College originated in 1912 when the Wisconsin State Legislature chartered the Madison Continuation School to serve high school dropouts ages 14-16. In 1921, it became the Madison Vocational School and added citizenship classes for immigrants. In 1930, transfer programs were launched to graduate from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. During the 1940s, Madison Vocational & Adult School held classes 24 hours each weekday for full-time WWII home front workers. By 1966, two-year associate degrees were granted. Four years later, it became Madison Area Technical College for the WTCS System’s District 4. In 1986, MATC acquired the Air Force’s former Truax Field to build its main campus. In 1988, Beverly S. Simone became the first president after five consecutive directors. In February 2010, Madison Tech created the Center for Adult Learning. In 2014, Madison Area Technical College launched the Digital Credentials Institute for online workforce training.

On July 1, 2016, the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association (HLC-NCA) Institutional Actions Council sent formal notification to Madison Area Technical College that the Level I accreditation status was extended through 2025-26 under President Jack E. Daniels III, Ph.D., who received the Phi Theta Kappa Shirley B. Gordon Award of Distinction. Located 146 miles southeast via Interstate 90 in Chicago, this giant 19-state Great Lakes Region accreditor is recognized by the U.S. Education Department and Wisconsin Technical College System (WTCS). Madison Area Technical College Application Requirements
Getting into Madison Area Technical College is classified “least selective” by the U.S. News & World Report because 100 percent of the 2,981 Fall 2017 entrants were openly enrolled. First-year Wolfpack still must graduate from high school or complete the GED/HSED equivalent though. HESI Exam scores of 75 or better would qualify. Freshmen need cumulative secondary GPAs above 2.0. Lower grades might be considered with a minimum 22 ACT or 1100 SAT score. International students must prove English ability with 58 TOEFL, 5.0 IELTS, 1055 GTEC, 550 TOEIC, 43 PTE, or higher scores. Standardized tests are wholly optional otherwise. Online Court Reporting Associate in Applied Science entrants must type at least 180 wpm. Fire Protection Associate in Applied Science cohorts must pass 200+ hours of firefighter training or the EMT Practical Exam plus a background check. RNs seeking the accelerated Associate of Science in Nursing must verify NCLEX-RN Exam completion and current state licensure.
Madison Area Technical College has a Fall application period of September 15th to November 15th. The Spring application period runs from February 1st to April 15th. Select programs allow Summer admission from September 15th to July 15th. It’s suggested that international students file before January 1st for Fall or May 1st for Spring starts. Final non-U.S. resident deadlines are July 15th and November 15th. April 15th is the priority deadline for financial aid consideration. Tuition and Financial Aid
For 2019-20, Madison Area Technical College is charging in-state undergrads $136 per associate credit or $184 per transfer credit. Non-residents pay $204 per associate credit or $276 per transfer credit. Supplemental fees are $14.50 per credit. Traditional full-time undergrads spend $4,407 in Wisconsin or $6,512 out-of-state annually. Note MATC budgets an extra $1,960 for books and $7,392 for off-campus living arrangements. Online courses only bill the in-state rate of $136 per credit though. Standard 60-credit online degrees cost $8,190 in total.
