East Mississippi Community College introduced online classes as a way to help its student body. Students can view a full list of the online courses that are available each semester before the semester begins. Though the college doesn’t offer full online associate’s degree programs, it offers enough classes through the virtual campus that students can complete most or all of their degree requirements over several years of study. The READI assessment offered by the college ensures that students are ready for those online classes.
The Social Science & Business Division at East Mississippi Community College oversees many of its programs. This division offers majors in accounting, advertising, business technology education, social work, public administration, and other fields. One popular major is in hotel, restaurant and tourism management. Students become better equipped at handling management issues, including how to find and hire new workers and respond to customers. As a hospitality management program, it includes internships for students in hotels and conference centers across the state.
Through the Humanities & Fine Arts Division, students can major in journalism, art, music performance and several foreign languages. Journalism majors will produce work that they submit to their classmates and their professors. They will also take classes on writing for television broadcasts and the web. The college’s performance programs help students become better singers and musicians. These programs include a music education option for those who want to work as music, choir, and band teachers.
East Mississippi Community College also has a Mathematics & Science Division that offers majors such as agricultural science, medical technology, meteorology, poultry science, and software engineering. In the college’s wildlife sciences program, students can do internships with state and national parks in Mississippi. This division oversees the college’s nursing program, which has accreditation and offers practical field experiences for students in the form of clinical rotations that they do in local medical facilities. Students in all majors can choose from hundreds of online classes every semester, including Principles of Accounting, General Psychology, African American History, Introduction to Athletic Training and Applied Business Mathematics.

East Mississippi Community College is a community college that offers degree, certificate and diploma programs in multiple fields. Established in 1927, it used the name East Mississippi Junior College for many years because most of its students transferred to full universities later. Now known as EMCC, it still offers transfer options for students who want to complete their bachelor’s degrees at other schools. Though the college has its headquarters in Scooba, Mississippi, it has seven different campuses that accept new students each year. Some of those campuses have on-campus housing available for students too. Many of the EMCC campuses offer workforce training programs too.
East Mississippi Community College Accreditation Details
EMCC is one of several community colleges in Mississippi with accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools through the organization’s Commission on Colleges. Also known as the SACSCOC, this accreditation gives students the change to apply for financial aid and get credits for their EMCC work when they transfer to a different university or college with regional accreditation. Regional accreditation from this organization gives students access to the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Some of the EMCC degree programs that have other types of accreditation include those in nursing, welding and paramedic training.
East Mississippi Community College Application Requirements
The admissions checklist offered by the college shows students what steps they need to take to apply. They will start with the application, which allows students to apply while they’re still in high school or after they graduate. It takes most students just a few minutes to fill it out. They will also need to provide their official transcripts. EMCC requires that students submit their transcripts to different addresses based on where they attended high school. The only other requirement is a standardized or placement test score. EMCC accepts the ACT, SAT and ACCUPLACER but does not ask for test scores from those who are 21 or older. Select programs will only accept an ACT score, including the nursing and funeral services programs.
Students who did not take a standardized test in high school can contact the college and schedule a time to take the ACCUPLACER exam on campus. The Counseling Center lets students take the exam on most weekdays. Prospective students interested in one of the college’s online programs can take a different online test too. It tests their computer skills and helps them determine whether they can handle an online program.
Tuition and Financial Aid
The cost of attendance at EMCC is $1,650 per semester for Mississippi residents who want to take up to 19 credits. If they take 20 or more credits, they’ll pay the same rate and an extra $155 per credit hour, which is the same rate that Mississippi residents pay when they take classes part-time. Students who are not from Mississippi pay a nonresident rate of $100 extra or $255 per credit hour. They pay $3,150 each semester for full-time enrollment. Some of the college’s programs charge additional fees of $30 to $200 per semester, but those fees usually apply to on-campus programs only. EMCC also offers room and board packages. Housing is available for $1,100 per semester and up, while students will pay at least $875 each semester for a meal plan.
Financial aid opportunities are available for students who need assistance and submit the FAFSA to show their level of need. Institutional scholarships go to students who apply for August first for the fall semester. Students can renew their scholarships if they maintain a GPA of 2.5 to 3.0 and take at least 15 credits of classes each semester. EMCC offers scholarships for students based on their athletic talents and any special skills they have as well as those who are in the military.
Community college students who submit the FAFSA also qualify for government aid. The federal government offers a Pell grant for students taking classes during the fall and spring semesters and a summer Pell grant for those taking classes in the summer. Students can qualify for federal loans and work-study too. East Mississippi Community College offers financial aid packages for online students that can include aid from the state government too.
