Online Associate’s Degree Programs Available from Columbus State Community College

Columbus State Community College offers online certificate and associate’s degree programs in nearly 20 subjects. The Associate of Science (AAS) in Recreation and Leisure Studies is a program available from the Department of Sport and Exercise Studies. It includes Event Management, Facilities Management, Security Management of Sport and Special Events, Casino Culture and Sport and Event Management. To go along with this degree, students can earn an online certificate in casino operations. The certificate program includes credits that count towards the degree and prepare students for running the casinos in Columbus and other parts of Ohio.
Criminal justice majors can earn an AAS in Probation and Supervision or Criminal Justice. The criminal justice major is best for those who want to transfer to another school and those who want to enroll in a police academy. It includes a law enforcement academy track that ensures students meet the minimum requirements for enrolling in an academy and that they have the physical strength needed to work in law enforcement. Some of the required classes include Introduction to Criminal Justice, Criminal Procedure, Mathematics for Emergency Service and Government and the Law.
The probation and supervision program teaches students the requirements needed to work in a corrections institute and prepares them for working as probation and parole officers. Both of the criminal justice programs require that students pass a background check that is similar to the checks law enforcement professionals must pass. The probation and supervision program includes courses such as Introduction to Addiction Studies, Introduction to Psychology, Criminal Investigation, Special Category of Offenders and Counseling: Probation and Parole as well as a practicum course. Students can earn a certificate in homeland security as part of either program too.
In the AAS in Business Management program, students learn the basics of operating a business, including how to manage an office and hire new employees. Those who want to start a business and learn how to create a business plan and get funding can major in entrepreneurship. Other majors available for online students include art, accounting, marketing, and digital design.
About Columbus State Community College
Columbus State Community College is a community college named after the city of Columbus, Ohio, which is the location of its campus. Founded in 1963 as the Columbus Area Technician’s School, it originally served as a technical school that included training for students. Just two years later, it became the Columbus Technical Institute, which is a name it kept until becoming Columbus State Community College in the 1980s. It also adopted the nicknames Columbus State and CSCC.
Students can now major in more than 50 subjects and earn an associate’s degree through the college. CSCC offers both transfer programs for those interested in some of the four-year universities in the state that let them complete two years of classes and certificate programs that take just a few months to complete. The Columbus campus is home to more than 20 buildings. CSCC operates a smaller campus in Liberty Township and offers classes on 10 extension sites, including those in Grove City and Dublin.
Columbus State Community College Accreditation Details
Any student applying to CSCC who needs financial aid should access the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) online and complete that form with the college’s unique code. Columbus State can grant financial aid to students because it has regional accreditation from the Higher Learning Commission (HLC). Some of the college’s programs that have other forms of accreditation include those in hospitality, welding, veterinary medicine, allied health, education, and nursing.
Columbus State Community College Application Requirements
Students applying to Columbus State can apply to the college as a recent high school graduate, transfer student or an adult who hasn’t taken any college classes. College Credit Plus is a new program that allows students to enroll in college and while still in high school. This program requires that students attend one of the 130 high schools that participate. They will need to attend one of the events on the CSCC campus and meet with an academic counselor to learn more. To apply, the college asks for a completed application and a high school transcript. Students also need letters that show they have permission from their guidance counselors and parents.
CSCC allows students to apply with a high school diploma or equivalency certificate too. Though there isn’t an application fee, students need to apply online and name both the programs they want to study and how they want to take classes. Columbus State asks that students either submit a standardized test score or take a placement test on campus. Either type of score will help the college determine which English and math classes the student needs to take. CSCC also asks for a transcript from students who earned any type of college credit. Once it receives all necessary information, the college will ask students to complete their online orientations.
Tuition and Financial Aid
The cost of attendance at CSCC comes to $4,738 each year. Ohio residents pay just $157.93 per credit hour, which includes their instructional and general fees. The college also adds those fees to the price that nonresidents pay of $323.03 per credit hour. Any student who did not live in Ohio when he or she applied is a nonresident. Nonresidents also include students who cannot show proof that they reside in the state. Some of the payment plans offered by the college include a deferred plan for those receiving help from an employer and extended payment plans for students who need more time to pay.
Both residents and nonresidents can qualify for financial aid if they use the CSCC code on the FAFSA. While the federal government offers loans and work-study, the state and federal government offer grants too. Students’ aid packages include some funds that they need to pay back later and others that do not require repayment. Columbus State also has a scholarship search that lets students look for scholarships from the college and other sources. The college offers 150 scholarships for future leaders of $1,500 and 35 scholarships of $5,500 for those majoring in a health field. Students applying to the online associate’s degree programs at Columbus State Community College can submit one application and apply for all of the college’s scholarships.
