Online Associate Degree Programs at Art Institute of Pittsburgh

The Art Institute of Pittsburgh appears in our ranking of the Top 10 Cheapest Associate’s in Graphic Design Degrees Online.

Students who want to study online can earn associate degrees in four different fields from the Art Institute of Pittsburgh. The first of those is an interior design program with a focus on designing kitchens and bathrooms. An Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree is available for most students, but those living in Minnesota can earn an Associate of Science (AS) degree instead. It features between 81 and 85 credits of work that students finish over eight quarters. Students must have access to drafting supplies and equipment because they will draft real designs of bathrooms and kitchens. They can add their designs to their portfolios later.

An Associate of Science in Digital Photography is also available from the Art Institute of Pittsburgh. Designed to help students develop stronger photography skills, it includes courses in both commercial photography and art photography. Students can learn how to take pictures with traditional cameras and digital equipment and how to edit their work before presenting it to clients. Principles of Photography is a course that all students will take, which teaches them the basic skills they need to use a camera. The institute offers certificates in digital photography and studio photography that students can earn online while working on a degree.

The institute offers both an AS in Graphic Design and a Diploma in Graphic Design. Those in the diploma program only need to take 36 credits of courses, but students will need to complete 91 credits to finish a full degree. These courses can include History and Analysis of Design, Digital Image Manipulation, Basic Web Animation, and Design and Technology. The institute also expects students to take a course called Portfolio that goes over what type of work they should put in their portfolios and how that work can help them find jobs. They can work on their portfolios before they graduate. An online associate program in web design and interactive media is also available. Writing for Interactive Media and Design for Mobile Devices are two classes in the program. The Art Institute of Pittsburgh also requires that majors take Emerging Media in Advertising and User Experience: Prototyping.

About the Art Institute of Pittsburgh

The Art Institute of Pittsburgh is part of The Art Institutes system, which offers classes in the arts for students via different delivery methods. While students can study on the Pittsburgh campus, they’ll also find a number of online programs available too. Established in 1921, the Art Institute of Pittsburgh started as a small arts school. Many of its early programs prepared students for working in the rapidly growing fields or animation and arts. It did not become part of The Art Institute system until the late 1960s. Now known as AIP, it added online programs to help students hone their art skills.

AIP has a main campus in The Strip area of Pittsburgh. Though it owned other buildings and operated in other parts of the city over the years, it chose The Strip in more recent years because of its close proximity to local students. Its online campus offers opportunities for both certificate and degree students and for those who want to learn more about art history. AIP has an enrollment of more than 400 traditional students and more than 2,900 online students.

Art Institute of Pittsburgh Accreditation Details

All the traditional and online degree programs offered by AIP have accreditation from the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE). This applies to all programs and gives students the chance to earn credits on another campus and transfer those classes to AIP. It’s also one of the requirements for students who need financial aid. The Council for Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA) and the Accrediting Commission of the American Culinary Federation Education Foundation (ACACFEF) granted accreditation to the institute too. It also has the approval to operate in the state from the Pennsylvania Department of Education.

Art Institute of Pittsburgh Application Requirements

Though AIP follows a quarter schedule, it has multiple start dates during each of those quarters. The application deadline varies based on that start date, but it’s usually around the beginning or the end of the month. Both online and traditional students will follow the same process. They typically request an information brochure from the website based on the programs or fields that interest them. Students can then apply for admission and look at their financial aid options before attending an online orientation session.

To apply to AIP, students must visit The Art Institutes website and create an account. The institute asks for a full name, home address and a phone number. Within 10 days of receiving the application, AIP requires that students submit their official high school and/or military transcripts. Those without a diploma can submit a GED score or transcript. They will also need to write an essay of around 250 words to explain why they chose AIP and what they want to study. The institute also asks that each student go through an interview with one of its representatives to talk about their college goals.

Tuition and Financial Aid

AIP offers financial aid packages because it wants every student to have the chance to afford college. All undergrads pay the same base rate when they first enroll, which is $375 per credit. Those in an associate program will take 12 credits each quarter and pay a $15 technology fee for each class they take. Once students take 25% of the credits needed for a degree or certificate, they receive a 10% discount. This discount increases to 15% when they reach the halfway point and 20% when they take the last 25% of classes needed to graduate.

Students enrolled in any program can apply for an art grant, which gives them up to $6,700. AIP offers some institutional grants and scholarships for students too, though most require a portfolio of the student’s work. The FAFSA can help students get more of the traditional aid that they need, including grants and loans. As the institute went seven years in a row without an increase its tuition, incoming students will know that it will not charge them any unexpected costs later. The Art Institute of Pittsburgh offers an affordable option for students looking at online associate degree programs today.
