Through the distance learning program offered at Albany Technical College, students now have the chance to finish associate’s degrees online. The college offers a list of its technical and system requirements, which lets students see what they need to have at home to enroll in one of the online programs. Those requirements include access to the internet and a computer that helps them complete their work.
The 11 associate’s degree programs that are available online include majors in operations management and hotel, restaurant, and tourism management. In the second program, students learn the fundamentals of working in the hospitality field, including how to treat customers and follow hiring laws. This program features occupational courses that include Hospitality Marketing, Food and Beverage Management, Event Planning and Supervision and Leadership in the Hospitality Industry. Students also do an internship and can work for nearly any hospitality company. In the operations management program, students take courses such as Introduction to Business, Introduction to Quality Assurance, Product Lifecycle Management and Strategies of Operations Management.
A similar major is available in business management, which asks students to take English and math courses before taking any business classes. Document Production, Principles of Management and Applied Office Procedures are some of the courses in the college’s business technology program. Another popular major is in fire science technology, which can prepare students for working in emergency management positions and fire departments. This is an online program that includes Hazardous Materials Operations, Fire Prevention and Inspection, Fire and Arson Investigation and Fire Behavior and Combustion. About Albany Technical College
Albany Technical College is a junior college in Georgia that offers two-year degree programs as well as certificate and diploma programs. Founded in 1961 as the Monroe Area Vocational – Technical School, it served as a small school with an enrollment of fewer than 200 students. Those students completed vocational and technical training. After merging with another local campus, the school became the Albany Area Vocational Technical School. This led to the two schools merging onto one campus in Albany and offering courses from both schools to new students. It became the Albany Technical Institute in 1989 and became part of the Technical College System of Georgia. That name remained until 2000, which was when the campus became Albany Technical College.
Also known as ATC and Albany Technical today, the college now offers programs designed for students living in the same county or one of the six surrounding counties. Students from nearby Alabama also enroll in the college’s programs. Several adult learning centers offer opportunities for adult students and let them get help as they work on their degrees. Those centers are located in some of the surrounding counties. Albany Technical has an enrollment of more than 5,000 students.
Albany Technical College Accreditation Details
ATC has regional accreditation from the Commission on Colleges (COC) of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). Students who need to use the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to get financial aid can access and use that form because of this accreditation. It is the same accreditation that gives ATC the right to accept credits when students transfer from another college with the same accreditation. Many of the medical programs offered by the college have specialty accreditation too as does its programs in design and media and cosmetology.
Albany Technical College Application Requirements
The college offers programs that help students complete their degrees in two years, earn a diploma in one year or finish a certificate in three months. Before applying, students should make sure that they meet the ATC admissions requirements. The college only accepts those who are at least 16 years old, and some programs do not accept students until they turn 18. Prospective students will also pay a $25 application fee and submit the Albany Tech online application. They need to submit a form that shows they are in the country legally and a second form if they want to qualify for the in-state tuition rate. ATC asks for either GED or high school transcripts and a standardized test score too.
Students can apply to ATC without taking the ACT or SAT score. They can submit a COMPASS or ACCUPLACER score as long as the score is no more than five years old. Those who do not have a score that they can submit need to take the Albany Tech placement exam. This exam consists of multiple sections of questions and helps the college make sure that the applicant is ready for college. The scores that students receive will also determine which introductory courses they need to take and whether they can skip those classes in some subject areas. ATC offers online forms for students who need to request their transcripts and other required forms.
Tuition and Financial Aid
ATC offers both full-time and part-time tuition rates for students. Full-time students pay $1,500 per semester for their tuition and can take 15 or more credits. Part-time students can take up to 14 credit hours and will pay $89 per credit hour. With their fees added to this amount, full-time ATC students pay $1,798 each semester. Part-time students pay fees of up to $300 each semester too. If students come from outside of Georgia, they will pay a nonresident rate that doubles their costs. Students who live in nearby counties of Alabama qualify for the same rate that Georgia residents do.
The Albany Tech Financial Aid Office is open on weekdays to help students in need. Counselors can speak to students who drop by for a visit and those who call or send emails. All types of aid available will go to those who submit the FAFSA and meet the requirements for federal aid, including being 18 years old or older and making progress towards a degree. Albany Tech financial aid packages can include grants, scholarships, federal work-study, and student loans. Though students can use both federal and private loans, they need to complete loan counseling before the college will release their funds.
